Are we responsible for our own erectile dysfunction?
Erectile dysfunction is a sexual health disorder that affects up to 40% of men in the UK. Causes and treatments are continuously being discovered, which leaves experts in limbo over whether we ourselves, are contributing to the condition in some shape or form.
The psychological causes of erectile dysfunction play an important part in the erection process as our brain has the ability to both enable and prevent it from occurring. If the part of the brain responsible for sending messages to our sexual organs is affected by stress or anxiety, the likelihood of achieving an erection becomes slimmer.
Essentially, negative messages can cause your brain to release chemicals that restrict the blood vessels. This hampers the erection process, making it difficult to become aroused for sexual activity of any kind.
Why do negative impulses occur?
Erectile dysfunction can also be caused by excessive working hours, stress and relationship problems. If you are put under pressure to perform in the bedroom, it can often prevent you from enjoying sex and satisfying your partner too.
By neglecting our own health and marinating a poor diet, we run the risk of suffering with erectile dysfunction that can lead to permanent damage. A lack of sleep is also a common contributor. Equally, large numbers of people who suffer depression may also experience symptoms of ED.
Clinical studies
A recent study in America concluded that lifestyle factors were responsible for a great deal of erectile dysfunction cases. Stress levels and excess alcohol consumption were 2 primary causes, as was sleep deprivation. The research is backed by representatives of the New England Research Institute who agree that: the “contribution of modifiable lifestyle factors” increased the likelihood of erectile dysfunction.
This is further supported by claims from the researchers based at the New England Research Institute who agree that a number of external factors will potentially increase the likelihood of erectile dysfunction for men in years to come.
Upturn for obesity drugs market
New health statistics have been released that show 29% of men and 32% of women in the UK are morbidly obese. According to BBC reports, the UK will be see a rise in obesity levels with up to 12 million adults being diagnosed come 2010. The stark warnings have led a number of industry analysts to predict a rapid surge for obesity drug treatments market, which many believe to be the best possible solution.
The obesity drugs market is currently valued at $1.4 billion and health experts are predicting it will continue to grow by 11.7% over the next 7 years. Consequently, this segment of the market will be worth as much as $3.1 billion by 2016, which is higher than ever before.
The pandemic- the driving force
Health experts believe that the rapid growth of the market will be directly influenced by increasing obesity rates worldwide. With the figures set to rise, it is only a matter of time before the numbers of obese people look to pharmaceutical solutions in a bid to reduce serious health problems later on in life. In addition to this, more and more drugs are entering the market. With proven trade records and minimal side effects, these treatments will surely help to boost sales.
Rica is currently the market leader for weight loss drug treatments with approximately 68% of the population gripped in what experts are calling an obesity pandemic.
Big predictions from the Worth Health Organisation (WHO) predict that 2.3 billion adults in the US will be obese by 2015. Following close behind is the UK, China and Russia who will also face a steep increase in obesity levels.
What should be done?
To date, experts have called for schemes that incorporate rationing and healthy eating plans, whilst others have discussed whether the credit crunch is too blame for increased obesity levels around the globe.
It is important that we appreciate how crucial a balanced diet and regular exercise is for our bodies. This should be our primary focus when getting into shape, before we decide to take any course of prescription medication.
Cigarette explosion calls for inquiry
If you smoke you run the risk of damaging more than just your internal organs. Research shows that premature ageing and cancer are directly linked to smoking. However, 1 man from Indonesia reported a completely unrelated side effect. He fell victim to an exploding cigarette that caused minor injuries on his mouth and neck.
Andi Susanto, 31, claims that a lit cigarette had exploded in his face, leaving 6 of his teeth damaged. Andi is reported to have been riding a motorcycle at the time of the freak accident. Local people who witnessed the mini explosion were horrified.
Due to the severity of his injuries and the nature of the accident, Andi has received a payment of 5m rupiah (£335) and had all his medical costs paid for by PT Nojorono Tobacco, the cigarette manufacturers.
Unknown causes
A specially assigned police unit are currently looking into what may have caused the cigarette to explode. Susanto, who claims he has decided to quit smoking, told the Jarkata Post newspaper that he now has a justified reason to stop for good.
Speaking to Metro TV, PT Nojorono Tobacco has been in talks with his family in a bid to come to an out of court settlement. A senior representative of the brand expressed there was no need for a recall and added that they are waiting for the results of forensic tests before making a decision.
When interviewed, Iwan Sulistyo, a brand representative, told the Jarkata Globe: "We do not put any strange materials in the cigarettes, so we think that this is a weird case. This is the first time for us."- BBC,09
Over 60% of the male population in Indonesia smoke regularly, giving the country one of the highest smoking rates in the World.
